Brookfield Multiplex was awarded the contract to construct Union Properties’ Automall Showroom and Office Tower at Motor City in Dubai. This represented around 20 per cent of the comprehensive Motor City Development that also includes villas, offices and community facilities.
The Automall Showroom and Office Tower encapsulates a two-level basement, a ground floor and 38-level shell and core office tower. Its centrepiece is a 114,000m2 showroom spanning four levels. The building also incorporates 7,000 grandstand seats and 36 VIP suites – from which motor racing can be viewed at the adjacent Autodrome track.
The project involved elements of complex construction, in particular, the facade featured an intricate tensile system with large inclined trusses. The roof and support structures were redesigned by Brookfield Multiplex to increase efficiency and therefore be more economical. With the Showroom and Grandstand structure nestled around the existing and operating racetrack, this provided significant logistical challenges which were ably met by Brookfield Multiplex.
As a result of the redesign, Brookfield Multiplex proposed the use of a number of innovative structural materials not previously used in the Middle East, and worked closely with the Local Authorities during the approval process.
The Office Tower’s green building design facilitates efficient energy and water consumption, improved indoor air quality and reduced environmental impact.
