The growth of Geraldton Port Authority (GPA) is underpinned by iron ore exports and strong minerals trade, including mineral sands, concentrate and talc. Now an integral Australian port, Geraldton Port has created a niche market for the export of iron ore in smaller ships to shallow draft ports in China.
One of the Geraldton Port’s greatest strengths is its diversity. In addition to catering for exports of grains, minerals, livestock and imports of fertiliser and fuels, the port welcomes cruise ships, oil rig tenders and many different exhibition craft. The port also supports Geraldton’s lucrative fishing industry, providing berthing facilities, maintenance, waste disposal and security services to the fishing boat harbour.
Increased regional trade and shipping demands led to the development of Berth 6. GPA enlisted Brookfield Multiplex in the design and construct of Berth 6, which was completed in 1995 in response to this expansion.
This project involved the construction and installation of a 400 metre by 25 metre precast and in-situ concrete topping wharf apron. Brookfield Multiplex undertook the foundations, ground anchors, bollards, service points and ancillary earthworks. Berth 6 has a capacity to load 650 tonnes per hour.
Construction occurred in operating port conditions and was successful in facilitating a smoother operation of the diverse commercial hub.
