Townsville's Northern Water Treatment Plant is now online

High quality treated water from the new Northern Water Treatment Plant (NWTP), constructed by Frookfield Multiplex, is now online, supplying Townsville's residents with water and aiding in the residential and industrial expansion of the region.

Following months of operational testing, the city’s northern suburbs are the first recipients

of treated water from the new $67 million plant at Kinduro near Rollingstone.

Funded by Townsville City Council and the Queensland Government, and designed and commissioned by contracted operator TRILITY, the plant will deliver quality water and will ensure that households in the northern regions of Townsville receive the same high quality water as more established areas.

“The completion of the Northern Water Treatment Plant is an essential part of the council’s plans to provide Townsville with a fully integrated water supply that will meet demands well into the future. Not only will the city have a much greater water production capacity, water from the NWTP will work alongside the city’s main plant at Douglas to form a part of a network of supply that can be directed to various areas of the city,” said Councillor Tyrell from Townsville City Council.

The water processed through membrane filtration at the NWTP will also flow into the Mt

Louisa Reservoir which services a large part of Townsville, including the suburbs: Kirwan, the Bohle, Garbutt, Vincent and Heatley.

“Brookfield Multiplex is very excited to have worked in partnership with TRILITY, the Townsville City Council and the state and Commonwealth Governments to deliver the infrastructure necessary to support the $300 million Integrated Regional Water Strategy in Townsville,” said Ian Meares, Managing Director of Brookfield Multiplex Engineering and Infrastructure.

A new water stabilisation plant was also constructed upstream at Crystal Creek to precondition the quality of the water prior to treatment at the new facility at Kinduro.
